  • "Lessons for Post-Communist Europe from the Iberian Integration into the EU" was presented at the II Congresso of the APCP- Associação Portuguesa de Ciência Política, in Lisbon (January 19-20, 2004). You can see the slides of my presentation.

  • "Bargaining for Democracy: Labor Unions and Democratic Consolidation in Spain," was presented at the 99th Meeting of the American Political Science Association (APSA) (August 28th-30th, 2003), in which I organized a panel on Legacies of Democratic Transitions.   • In the spring of 2003 I presented papers in three conferences:.

  • I was invited to participate in the conference The European Union and the Americas II: Conference on Spanish Investment in Latin America organized by the Miami European Union Center. Florida International University and the University of Miami; and FIU Latin American and Caribean Center, on November 18-19, 2002 at the Omni Colonnade Hotel in Coral Gables.   • I presented "Iberian Labor and Democratic Consolidation" at the 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association (APSA) on August 31st, 2002. I organized the panel: "The Challenges of Democratic Consolidation: Rethinking Iberian Democracy Twenty-five years after the Transitions."   • "The Experience of Spain and Portugal in the European Union: Lessons for Latin America" was presented at the Symposium: The European Union: A Polity in Transformation, and a Model for the Americas in Transition, organized by the Miami European Union Center, at the University of Miami, on April 3-6, 2002.   • I presented a paper about "Corporatism in Iberia" at the 13th International Conference of Europeanists organized by Columbia University's Council of European Studies in Chicago on March 2002. You can check the transparencies of my presentation, and the paper

  • In September 2001 I presented a paper at the 2001 Meeting of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in Washington DC, titled: "Neocorporatism and Economic Reform in Mexico and Spain in the 1980s." In this paper I examine the impact of neocorporatist social pacts on adjustment policies in both countries in the 1980s.

  • At the 2001 Annual Meeting of the New England Political Science Association I presented: "Reconceptualizing Citizenship in the New Europe: Some Lessons from the 15th Anniversary of Spain and Portugal's Accesion to the European Union" analyzing the impact of EU membership on Spain and Portugal with professor Paul C. Manuel from Saint Anselm College.

  • In the spring of 2001 I was invited to give presentations by two institutions: The Instituto de Empresa in Madrid, Spain and San Francisco State University. You can check the transparencies that I have used for these presentations:

  • I presented a paper about my second book, at the 12th International Conference of Europeanists organized by Columbia University's Council of European Studies in Chicago on March-April 2000.   • As part of the Hispanic Heritage Month I gave a presentation at Suffolk University in the Fall of 1999 titled "Spain after Franco." You can check the transparencies that I used for the presentation.

  • In the spring of 1999, I traveled to Mexico with a Suffolk University graduate student (Margaret Doherty-Lopez). We traveled as part of a Delegation organized by the Mexico Solidarity Network Mexico Solidarity Network Website. We interviewed leaders of the independent unions, and the new rulers of the Federal Distict in Mexico City. We also traveled to Chiapas where we met with representatives of NGOs, human rights groups, political parties, and spent time with indigenous communities.

  • In March 31st, 1999 I gave a presentation for the CAS Seminar Series at Suffolk University titled: "Globalization and Domestic Policies." You can check the transparencies that I used for the presentation and the tables and graphs.

  • In November of 2001 I organized a conference at The Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies with the Iberian Study Group and the Portuguese Study Group to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Spain and Portugal's accession to the European Union. The title of the conference was: "From Isolation to Integration: 15 Years of Spanish and Portuguese Membership in Europe." You can find the program and information about the Iberian conference in the conference's web page. The conference took place on November 2nd and 3rd of 2001. You can also read the grant proposal and the program of the conference. I raised $55,000 for this project from the following institutions that co-sponsored the conference:The Tinker Foundation; The New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College;The Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard University;The Gulbenkian Foundation; The Cultural Office of the Spanish Embassy in the United States; The Camoes Institute; The EU Center at Harvard University; The Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies; The Spanish Consulate in Boston, the Portuguese Consulate in Boston and Suffolk University. A volume with a selection of the conference papers has been published as a special issue of the journal South European Society & Politics (Vol. 8, 2003) and by Frank Cass.

  • In the Fall of 1998, I organized the Workshop: Environmental Economics in Latin America. It took place at the The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. This workshop was sponsored by Laspau/Harvard University, the Ford Foundation, and Fulbright/USIA, and co-hosted by The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. I chaired and coordinated it.

    This workshop explored recent developments in valuation of environment assets, the policy forces behind units of carbon absorption being traded as commodities, advances in understanding of economic effects of environmental investments. A number of advancements in this field merit new understandings that we discussed in this seminar. The specific objectives of the workshop were to:

    1. Understand carbon markets and the sale of environmental services on the world market.

    2. Gain experience in valuation of environmental assets.

    3. Explore environmental benefit/cost analysis as a fundamental aspect of decision-making.

    4. Examine policy tools including the economics of trade and environment and issues of sustainable tourism.
